Dr. Vipul Bhatt Presents at IPC 2020 on the Future of Multimode Links for Datacenters
In this presentation we discuss the future of multimode links for datacenters. We begin by highlighting an often ignored but proven fact that for short reaches, VCSEL-based optical transceivers are the most cost-effective and energy-efficient solution. But as data rates increase to keep up with bandwidth growth, can multimode transceivers maintain their value in data centers? The answer is a resounding “yes”. Recent demonstrations and standards-development work suggest that 100G-per-lane VCSELs will enable three short-reach data center applications in the near future – server connectivity, switch connectivity, and connectivity for an emerging class of systems aimed at machine learning and high-performance computing.
